Dragon Scale Ear Warmers – Free Crochet Pattern

This free dragon scale ear warmers pattern is easy enough for an advanced beginner and is a quick make. The headband uses the crocodile stitch to create the look of dragon scales.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used

  • Chain – ch
  • Single crochet – sc
  • Double crochet – dc
  • V stitch (dc, ch1, dc in same stitch)
  • Crocodile stitch

Yarn Pictured: Red Heart Unforgettable (100% Acrylic), Colorway (Echo, Petunia)

There are quite a few variations of the crocodile stitch out there. I work in multiples of 6 and for my scale foundation row alternate V stitches and double crochets. I’ve included the video tutorial for my dragon gloves in this post as a reference for how to work the two row repeat that make up the dragon scales.

Find the forever free pattern below or purchase an inexpensive, ad-free PDF in my shop.

Instructions

Ch 60, slip stitch to join, making sure not to twist chain.

(Test sizing to make sure it fits comfortably around your head. If not you may need to adjust your tension or try a different hook size.)

Round 1: SC around (60 stitches)

Round 2: Chain 3, DC in same stitch (V stitch created), *chain 1, skip stitch, DC in next stitch, chain 1, skip stitch, V stitch in next stitch, repeat from * around, slip stitch to second chain of starting chain 3 to join.

Round 3: *Work crocodile stitch in first V stitch (5 DC dound right post of V stitch and then 5 DC up left post of V stitch), slip stitch around back of next DC, continue from * around, slip stitch in last DC of round.

Rounds 4: Chain 3, DC in same stitch (first V st made), *Chain 1, DC in center of last scale, Chain 1, V st in DC from previous row (between two scales). Repeat from * around.

Rounds 5-11: Repeat Rounds 3 and 4 until you have 5 finished dragon scale rows.

Round 12: SC around.

Round 13: Slip stitch around.

Round 13 is optional. I like to add a slip stitch row to match the tension of the starting chain row.

Cut and weave in ends.
